12 Schüssler-Salze (Schüssler’s Tissue salts) – 12 mineral nutrients for good health!
What are tissue salts? Dr. Wilhelm Schüssler, a 19th century medical doctor from Germany, discovered that there are 12 inorganic minerals (or biochemical tissue salts) that occur naturally in the body, and that these minerals have to be present to ensure good health. They contribute to the structural integrity of cells and facilitate vital biochemical processes in the body. Forms of these minerals include calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, iron and silica.
So if they are already in our body, why do we need to take them? An unhealthy lifestyle, bad nutrition, over-processed foods and stress are just some of the culprits depleting our bodies of essential minerals. This deficiency may cause the tissue to become dysfunctional and vulnerable to disease. They are gentle, natural, pleasant tasting, absorbed rapidly, non-toxic and non-addictive, safe to use with prescription medications, and suitable for broad, general health complaints. I prescribe these tissue salts frequently and successfully alongside constitutional treatment in my practice – they are real ‘gems’.
Here is a brief description and indications of each salt
Calcium Fluoratum #1 Tissue Salt – “bone salt”: This tissue salt acts on the surface of bones, enamel of teeth, elastic tissue and epidermis. The action of Calc Fluor tissue salt corrects overgrowth and hardness as well as deficiency and lack of strength/tone (such as deficient enamel and low bone density, joint disorders (when they give way easily and dislocate), lack of strength/tone of soft tissues, fissures and cracks on fingertips, hard skin on heels etc.
Overgrowth: bone spurs; induration and stony hardness of glands; scar tissue from x-rays, burns and surgical wounds; varicose veins, spider veins, haemorrhoids; arteriosclerosis and warts. Deficiency: deficient enamel and low bone density; joint disorders (when they give way easily and dislocate); lack of strength/tone of soft tissues; fissures and cracks on fingertips, hard skin on heels etc.
Calcium Phosphoricum #2 Tissue Salt – “bone nutrition”: The action of Calc Phos tissue salt corrects issues around poor nutrition. 67 % of this tissue salt is found in bone. There can be no bone without it and no healthy bone if this salt is lacking in the system. It works not only on bone, but teeth and the brain too. Therefore it’s of great benefit for delayed development, repair of bone and body tissue, loss of bone, teeth or any other tissue. It’s useful for: delayed dentition, rickets, open fontanelles, emaciated children with shrunken bodies and flabby bellies; soft, thin, brittle bones; growing pains; slow ossification. Non-union of bones; delayed healing of broken bones; osteoporosis; improves memory and relieves nervousness when nutrition deficiency.
Ferrum Phosphoricum #3 Tissue Salt – “inflammation salt”: Ferrum Phos may be considered the “first aid tissue salt” as it is greatly beneficial when given at the 1st stage of all acute conditions. It is also good for the convalescent stage to relieve final effects of inflammation. Ferrum Phos addresses inflammation of all tissue except bone tissue. It’s especially effective in anaemic individuals. Iron is an important component of haemoglobin, the substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to transport it throughout the body. It’s of great benefit for: low immunity (susceptibility to catch colds etc); anaemia; nose bleeds; minor injuries; 1st degree burns, such like sunburns; weak memory and concentration problems; poor circulation (cold hands and feet); colds, coughs, fevers of unknown origin, early stage of tonsillitis; diarrhoea and gastritis.
Kalium Chloratum (Kalium muriaticum) #4 Tissue Salt – “mucus membrane salt”: Kali Mur is a component of all parts of the body, especially connective tissue. It helps metabolising glucose and protein in the cells. It dissolves white or greyish discharges from skin and mucus membranes. It’s useful for: mucus congestion; catarrhal disorders in sub-acute inflammatory states, sinusitis with thick white discharge; complaints of the respiratory system, such like colds, coughs, bronchitis; tonsillitis, ulcerated sore throat; glandular or rheumatic swellings; cysts with white discharge; allergies: clear/white thick nasal discharge; digestive disturbances, especially from rich or fatty foods.
Kalium Phosphoricum #5 Tissue Salt – “nerve and muscle salt”: Kali Phos is a component of brain, nerves (vasomotor, sensory, motor and sympathetic), muscles, blood and inter-cellular fluids. If the distribution of kalium and phosphate ions in the body is disturbed, there will be muscle and nerve weakness, muscle pains and even muscle paralysis. Kali Phos has a stabilising effect on nerves, mind and body by regulating the distribution of kalium ions in the body. It’s of great use for: mental exhaustion and overwhelm, weak memory; mental deterioration, senility, Alzheimer’s; chronic fatigue from mental exertion; insomnia from nervousness, nightmares; low energy, lack of motivation, irritability and feeling melancholic; hyperactivity in children; supportive remedy for depression, sluggish circulation and weak action of heart, muscle weakness and paralysis.
Kalium Sulphuricum #6 Tissue Salt – “liver and skin salt”: Kali Sulph is a component of skin, bones, muscles and nails. It’s function is to aid utilisation of protein in the metabolic process. Sulphate helps the body to create cysteine, which is needed for the healthy growth of hair, nails, cartilage and skin. Sulphate is also essential for detoxification of the liver and skin. It is the basis remedy for all liver and skin diseases, and is therefore of great use for: all inflammations of mucus membranes (incl. throat, conjunctiva, stomach and intestines);dandruff, dry scaly skin, skin eruptions; third (chronic) stage of inflammations; yellow/green discharge from any mucus membrane or skin surface; yellow, slimy tongue; psoriasis; athlete’s foot; brittle nails; shifting and rheumatic pains in the limbs.
Magnesium Phosphoricum #7 Tissue Salt – pain cell salt”: Mag Phos is a component of muscles, blood cells, brain, spinal marrow, nerves and teeth. Dr Schüssler found that Mag Phos has a great affinity for nerves and muscles. It acts as an antispasmodic and greatly relieves nerve pains, cramps and convulsions. The pains are radiation and the person is oversensitive to pain and noise. Symptoms are better for firm pressure of the affected part, bending double, warmth and heat. Symptoms are worse for cold air, cold water and exhaustion. It’s of great use for the following conditions: muscle spasms and cramps; hiccoughs; muscular twitches; renal or gallbladder colic; gastrointestinal colic; migraines; menstrual pains; toothache, such as severe & neuralgic pain in decayed and filled teeth.
Natrium Chloratum (Natrum Muriaticum) #8 Tissue Salt – “water balance salt”: Nat mur is a component of all body fluids and tissues. As salt attracts water, the presence of salt keeps the body properly hydrated. If cells lack salt, the water stays in the intercellular fluid and creates a bloated/puffy effect in that area of the body. It’s of great use for: disorders of fluid metabolism: excessive fluid or dryness anywhere in the body, such like oedema, salivation, colds with clear discharge and sneezing; runny nose, including hay fever with bouts of sneezing and nasal discharge like egg white; cold sores, hives; craving for salty foods; loss of taste and smell; constipation; excessive thirst with dryness of skin, eyes etc; headaches brought on by dehydration.
Natrium Phosphoricum #9 Tissue Salt – “acid neutraliser”: Nat Phos is a component of blood cells, muscles, nerve and brain cells and intercellular fluids. Dr Schüssler found that Nat Phos is indicated for excess acid in the body as it assists the breaking down of lactic acid. Nat Phos helps restore proper pH balance in the body and neutralises acidic activity. It’s beneficial for people who cannot eat acidic foods and who are on high protein diets. When the distribution of sodium and phosphate ions is out of balance, uric acid levels rise. Therefore this tissue salt is of great use for: gout; rheumatism (painful muscles and connective tissue) and sciatica; cystitis, especially if it’s brought on after consuming acidic foods or drinking alcohol; vaginitis from excessive yeast and/or acidic foods; hangovers; worms. If Nat Phos is lacking, the body keeps inviting worms; food allergies; sensitive to sugar, blood sugar issues; heartburn or indigestion; complaints from fatty foods; sour smell to body; acne with greasy skin.
Natrium Sulphuricum #10 Tissue Salt – “elimination salt”: Nat Sulph is a component of extracellular tissue. Dr Schüssler states that Nat Sulph attracts the water formed during the retrogressive metamorphosis of the cells and secures its elimination from the organism. This is a liver remedy needed by those living in damp environments. It’s recommended during liver cleanses as it supports the action of the liver, pancreas, intestines and kidneys in removing toxins and waste from the body. It’s useful in treating the following conditions: liver disease and gallbladder disorders; asthma, worse dampness; lung and respiratory infections with yellow mucus; oedema and gout; rheumatism; warts; constipation and diarrhoea; leg ulcers.
Silicea #11 Tissue Salt – “lack of grit salt”: Silicea is a component of skin, hair, nails, muscles, nerves, glands and connective tissue. A large portion of the earth’s crust is composed of Silicea (flint), and as it is absorbed by plant and animal life, Silicea provides “grit” of most living things. Silicea acts as a catalyst – it harnesses the minerals and gets them working in the body. It affects fibrous tissue and creates a firm structure that supports the harmonious function of all other cells. It releases impurities which should not be in the body, dissolves hard formations (i.e. scar tissue, keloid scars, adhesions) and builds up weakened structures such as bones and teeth. It’s of great use for: lack of strength in connective tissues; brittle or weak nails, ingrown nails, nails with white spots, ridges in nails; ear, sinus and respiratory infections; gum abscesses; fistulas; styes; discharging abscesses; excessive perspiration of feet and arm pits; bunions; hair loss; hardening of glands.
Calcium Sulphuricum #12 Tissue Salt – “connective tissue salt”: Calc Sulph is found in its natural form in cartilage and is a component of amino acids (most important component of protein). It promotes re-absorption of boils and abscesses. Bodily discharges are yellow. Calc Sulph affects the formation of connective and supportive tissue in the body, acts as an anti-inflammatory for the skin and supports the growth of new cells. It has a cleansing effect throughout the system. It’s of great use for: boils and abscesses; acne, eczema, psoriasis and dandruff; cracked skin, especially hands and feet in cold weather; fungal infections (tinea); upper respiratory infections (colds) with yellow nasal discharge; conjunctivitis; disturbance of bone growth; chronic rheumatic conditions; liver disorders; persistent and suppurative bronchitis.
